Photography: Faern

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1. Tell us about your sense of style. What do you use to express yourself? Clothes? Jewelry? Posture? Words? Music?

My personality is best expressed through my clothes and my jewelry. I resonate with rich colors and tend to wear big earrings! Most of my time is spent in yoga clothes so I have a lot of tunic tops and wraps that I use as layers and allow me to easily go from the yoga studio to the city streets in style! Beyond my style, people tell me that my posture is an authentic expression of who I am as a teacher and a citizen of the world.

2. Has your yoga practiced changed how you see yourself?

Most definitely! Yoga has truly helped me to become more comfortable with who I am. The practice has taught me to look for the good and embrace all of the diverse parts of myself, and to see the beauty even in my quirks and imperfections. This of course is always a work in progress but continues to evolve as my practice and studies deepen.

3. What made you decide to practice yoga for the first time? How is yoga different from what you expected?

It was a long time ago and though I did not “know” what yoga was, my heart felt a deep recognition of the word. That recognition pulled me to give yoga a try. I am not sure I had any expectations, but what I definitely do remember is that I loved how I felt for several days afterward, and wanted to go back for more!

4. Tell us about your first yoga teacher. How did he or she impact you? How do you share those lessons with others?

For the first several years I practiced in a monastic school that was fairly rigid and serious. Within that setting, though, the first teacher that inspired me brought heart and joy and held a space for playfulness within the practice. It was so long ago that I don’t remember anything in particular that she said, it was more about her way of being that really made an impression on me. Looking back I can see that her positive attitude and authentic happiness was magnetic and a result of her practice. I very much
wanted that for myself!

5. What motivates you to practice on those days when you just don’t feel like it? Do you have any tips for the rest of us?

Different things motivate me on different days. When I am feeling tired or uninspired I go to child’s pose. Often times by just getting myself to the mat, a practice will usually unfold: Downward Dog leads to Uttanasana, a few hip openers, a handstand… I follow the lead of my body and a sequence is revealed from the inside out. My students are the biggest source of my inspiration. Knowing that I have to teach and my desire to serve the students by planning the best possible class gets me juiced up to practice. If I could offer one tip, I would suggest that you commit yourself to practicing 10-15 minutes per day. Once you get to the mat you will often stay for double or even triple the time to which you originally committed. And even if you only end up practicing for those 15 minutes, I believe you will definitely feel more in your body and in your heart for your efforts.

Model: Ann Lam

Photography: Faern

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1. Tell us about your sense of style. What do you use to express yourself? Clothes? Jewelry? Posture? Words? Music?

Actions and words communicate a world of information. Some people are more attuned to one or the other (for example, tone of voice used versus meaning of a statement). I aim to be mindful of both when I interact with people, from friends to complete strangers.

2. Has your yoga practiced changed how you see yourself?

Yoga has enabled me to see my weaknesses as a pathway for growth. Rather than feel embarrassed about my insecurities, I am eager to see how I can accept them as a starting point from which to learn new things.

3. What made you decide to practice yoga for the first time? How is yoga different from what you expected?

During winter break of my freshman year in college, a friend from high school suggested that we meet up and take an “underground” yoga class together. I remember doing tree pose in a random person’s attic. The experience of “feeling” myself in shapes, some more comfortable than others, definitely intrigued me. When an opportunity came to practice yoga regularly, I took it. Over time I realized that the physical shapes were vast fertile grounds to be explored and cultivated, in realms physical, mental, and spiritual.

4. Tell us about your first yoga teacher. How did he or she impact you? How do you share those lessons with others?

I went to a few studios before I settled on a lovely space in Rye, New York, called the Wainright House. Suzanne J. taught Astanga and Vinyasa Flow classes. She was a combination of seriousness and fun, and I attended her classes regularly, sometimes four or five times a week. One time, after taking two back-to-back rigorous classes, she sensed my weariness, looked me in the eye, and firmly said, “Take a bath tonight.” I found it funny at the time, but I listened to her and felt replenished afterward. In retrospect, I think she was telling me to take care of myself and to balance a “hard” practice with a “soft” one. I see so many people around me pushing themselves by working long hours, not sleeping enough, not congratulating themselves enough, and I want to tell them (and sometimes I do), “Take a bath tonight!”

5. What motivates you to practice on those days when you just don’t feel like it? Do you have any tips for the rest of us?

Child’s Pose. When I don’t feel like doing much at all, I can usually muster a decent Child’s Pose. I focus on my breath by simply listening. And from there I might try Table Top. Then back to Child’s Pose. Next I might try alternating between Cat and Cow poses, only to come right back into Child’s Pose. I just keep pushing the edge of my comfort zone, returning to Child’s Pose when I need to regroup. I let the practice unfold as easefully as possible, taking as much time as I need. The body follows the mind that follows the breath. So what evolves when I simply intend to breathe in Child’s Pose often surprises me.

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1. Tell us about your sense of style. What do you use to express yourself? Clothes? Jewelry? Posture? Words? Music?

I express myself through movement. My husband makes fun of me all the time for acting things out as I speak. Because of this, I dress in clothes that allow me to move. When I was 10, I told my mom I didn’t like wearing jeans because they cut off circulation to my brain, and I still kind of feel that way. Even if I need to wear a certain type of clothing for work, I try to find the least restrictive clothes possible. I’m drawn to certain colors and styles, but they have more to do with looking good than with expressing myself.

2. Has your yoga practiced changed how you see yourself?

Definitely. Before I started practicing yoga I had a very concrete sense of sense, but the more I got into the meditative side of yoga, the less concrete my sense of self became; I became more aware of how dynamic I was from day-to-day, hour-to-hour, and even minute-to-minute. This shift in perception allows me to be more aware of constant changes in my body and mind and to be compassionate toward them.

3. What made you decide to practice yoga for the first time? How is yoga different from what you expected?

When I was in my early teens, my friend Chrisann borrowed a yoga book from the library got me to try some poses with her. I think that was the first I’d heard of yoga, so I got a taste of it before I had a chance to form expectations. What I probably would have never expected was that yoga is very healing. When Chrisann was going through a tough break-up years later, I was giving her some tips on how to get through it, and one of the things I said was, “Do yoga. I don’t know why, but it helps. Just do it.”

4. Tell us about your first yoga teacher. How did he or she impact you? How do you share those lessons with others?

Debbie (Newport Yoga, Port Moody, BC, Canada) was the first teacher who made me really love yoga. I took a regular class called Yoga For Athletes with her, and I still use those classes as inspiration for my own teaching. Rather than being strongly rooted in tradition or adhering strictly to one style, she met her students where they were and offered a challenging, but very accessible practice. Her style of teaching communicated to us, “where you are right now is perfect.” In every yoga class I teach or assist, I try to convey that same message to my students.

5. What motivates you to practice on those days when you just don’t feel like it? Do you have any tips for the rest of us?

Planning to meet someone at my yoga studio always gets me out the door. My husband and I always meet at the gym after work so that we don’t get a chance to talk each other out of it at home. I attend a certain teacher’s class regularly, I get to know them and tell them when I’ll next be in class so they’ll be expecting to see me. For some reason it’s easier to let yourself down than to let other people down.

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1. Tell us about your sense of style. What do you use to express yourself? Clothes? Jewelry? Posture? Words? Music?

I definitely use clothes, jewellery, accessories and music to express myself. I go through phases with all of them. I’ve been through hat phases, feather phases, and with my singing; jazz, hip hop and acoustic phases!! Constantly evolving.

Right now I find myself in a lot of long dresses and skirts, super comfortable fabrics, a lot more feminine than ever before… And leggings. Always leggings

2. Has your yoga practiced changed how you see yourself?

My Yoga Teacher Training was very instrumental in changing how I see myself, and from there my practice has come to be the facilitator of a lot of introspective exploration for me…

3. What made you decide to practice yoga for the first time? How is yoga different from what you expected?

I can’t really remember why, but I know it was offered at a Gym I used to do Step, Pump and other aerobic style classes at. I like trying new things so I went one day, and went back every week after that for years!

It took me a long time to understand the importance and impact of deep breathing to my practice. And it has completely changed my life since. So yeah, it is completely different from what I expected, in that it is not just an exercise or hobby I participate in occasionally, it is a holistic approach to life.

4. Tell us about your first yoga teacher. How did he or she impact you? How do you share those lessons with others?

My first teacher was a woman called Skye. She taught at the above mentioned gym. She actually had her own studio but it was quite a way out of town so twice a week she would come to the city to teach to reach more people.

What first struck me about her was her genuine friendliness and kindness, she made time to get to know everybody. And when I got a haircut, she noticed! And complimented me!

Skye taught me immediately not to push myself, to let things come naturally, I hope I emulate this belief in my interactions with others…

5. What motivates you to practice on those days when you just don’t feel like it? Do you have any tips for the rest of us?

Ugh. I am at a constant struggle with my motivation levels. I am making moves to work on it…

Getting enough sleep and water are two MAJOR ones… Other things that I’m exploring are acupuncture, Chinese herbs and time management!!

Model: Abbie Dutterer

Photography: Faern

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1. The only instruction you were given prior to this photo shoot is that you can’t wear traditional yoga clothes! Tell us why you chose your outfit. What does it say about you?

I essentially have two wardrobes: my work clothes and my yoga clothes. I am constantly trying to integrate what happens on the mat with my life outside the yoga studio. I spend significantly more time in business suits than I do in my “traditional” yoga wear. As I’ve become more devoted to my practice, I have tried to bring more of “my mat” into my workplace. I hope that what I am trying to cultivate in terms of calmness, curiosity, and peace in my life – both at work and at home – adds something to the people around me. I love my job and I am proud of what I do, but it is not the only way that I define myself. When I first started with yoga, I referred to what I did as a hobby when discussing it with colleagues. I now own it as my practice, and a spiritual part of me that I am happy to share. And when I channel oujiyya breathing and uddiyana in the bathroom before presenting at an important meeting, I feel like I’m doing okay in the melding of my two worlds. My hope is that I’m the same Abbie no matter what I wear.

2.How does yoga help you to express who you are and who you want to be?

The simplest, most beautiful thing that I have learned from yoga is how to breathe and how to allow myself to relax into that breath. It was like living in color for the first time. Admittedly, it has taken me a long time to make small bits of progress, but slowly, I am learning to inhale, exhale, and let go of everything else. It is really hard to express yourself fully from a place of numbness and shallow breathing. My thoughts would be so jumbled and much of my reactions to life’s events came from fear of failure. In taking the time to feed my body with breath instead of panic, I found that I could make more informed decisions and think more broadly at work. At home, it has made me a better, kinder wife to my husband and a more compassionate listener to my friends. In learning how to breathe and let go of fear, I was able to connect with the part of me that wanted more adventure and opportunity. And so, in its own way, yoga brought me 3,000 miles to California for the chance at an adventure in San Francisco.

3. What important lessons have you learned about yourself through your yoga practice?

Yoga truly put back together parts of me that I didn’t know were broken. My practice helped me realize that I was fairly disconnected from my physical body. And being disconnected made all of the connections – mind-body, body-soul – short-circuit. Yoga teaches me everyday that I am a strong person – physically and emotionally. My old goals for myself centered on being successful and surviving the fear of failure or harm that defined my existence. I now focus on living a life that is happy, healthy, and whole, and sharing that with those around me. An intuitive and compassionate yoga teacher, who has informed much of my practice, asked me once in a session (as I was struggling and feeling somewhat sorry for myself in a pose), “You know that you’re strong, right?” It wasn’t that I didn’t know it – it was that I hadn’t called on it. Our practice makes us strong, but engaging and using that strength is the true fruit of what we do. We have to access it – and work on it – and desire to come from that place of strength in our actions in life. There is a lot of power in finding physical strength – because it is more than just our physical being that can be nurtured in that exploration.

4. What’s your favorite pose? Why?

The driven, Type-A part of me wants to say dolphin pose, because every time I find myself in this asana, a love-hate relationship commences. Our favorite pose should be the one that challenges us the most, right? The playful part of me wants to say handstand or crow pose, because it is such a fun moment to be upside down or off the ground. Yoga should be about what makes us happy, right? But the pose that truly captures my joy and spirit and passion for yoga is Virabhadrasana II. Warrior II requires grounding through the legs, truly feeling for feet pushing into the ground, opening of the arms, a sturdy torso, and deep concentration on the hips. It is a reminder of the first time I felt strong in yoga. I also practice Forrest Yoga, and the way that Forrest Yogis take Warrior II is particularly strong – our heads face straight ahead – protecting our necks and letting the focus be in strength from legs and torso – the grounding of the pose. Warrior pose doesn’t have to be about harshness – it can be about the softness as well.

5. Tell us what inspires you so we can be inspired, too.

In the midst of all of the poses and places and styles of yoga, there is a humble simplicity to the practice. Here are a few dozen, mostly unrelated people in a room, without shoes, on mats, breathing, moving their bodies and trying to find space in their life. That inspires me. Sun Salutations require no language – we can learn by simply doing – sometimes a leader and sometimes a follower. I travel a great deal and find myself welcomed by strangers into their sacred spaces with open arms. Hot rooms where tears mix with sweat and joy and raw emotion. That this practice – our yoga – can be done without anything but our natural body and soul is one of the most beautiful truths and one of the more powerful realizations that I have had as a human. We are enough with just our breath and that is beautiful. To be a witness to that – to be a part of that community in the world – makes me know that what I bring to the world and the way that I approach my life matters.

So-Hum : Self Expression Through Yoga

Model: Barbara Blum

Photography: Faern

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1.The only instruction you were given prior to this photo shoot is that you can’t wear traditional yoga clothes! Tell us why you chose your outfit. What does it say about you?

I’ve found that doing yoga in non-traditional yoga clothes is sort of tricky and inhibiting.. so I figured the idea behind this prerequestiste was to break out of the norm and that it was supposed to be fun. And for me, I tend to get pretty serious during yoga, so the idea of doing something fun and nontraditional sounded great. I went for a dress and heels, no easy task! I’d call it casual-pretty… which I think sort of sums up my style in general.

2. How does yoga help you to express who you are and who you want to be?

I don’t think of yoga helping me ‘express’ who I am so much as helping me get in touch with who I am. By that I mean, who I really am… on the inside, after stripping away all the constructs of society, my past, my immediate world and my own brain. And this is, of course, who I want to be.

3. What important lessons have you learned about yourself through your yoga practice?

There are several powerful things yoga has given me: The first and most important is that finding gratitude changes everything. When you choose to see the gifts that come to you, no matter how negatively they might be presented, your entire perspective shifts, and when your perspective shifts your reality changes and every facet of life becomes more beautiful and more meaningful. Secondly, I have learned that strength is an eternal well inside me, accessed easily with an inhale. The physical strength I’ve gained by staying present and breathing through difficult postures on the mat has directly translated into staying present and tapping into emotional strength off the mat during times of difficulty or crisis. It’s been truly amazing to feel this process in action. And finally, yoga has taught me, on a deep core-level, that I am completely wonderful and wonderfully complete, inside and out just as I am… right here, right now.

4. What’s your favorite pose? Why?

It’s extremely difficult to choose a favorite pose, since so many poses resonate deeply in such completely different ways, but I’m going to say ”Dancer.” To me this pose embodies expansion and beauty. I feel beauty in my soul and in my body and I feel like I could stretch out forever, physically and spiritually.

5. Tell us what inspires you so we can be inspired, too.

Beauty. It’s in the eye of the beholder and you can find it everywhere. When I see other people creating beauty through any of it’s endless mediums or I simply see the beauty of the universe in the moon or the sunrise we take for granted every day, it fills me with a fundamental joy that is contagious and oh-so-inspiring!

Photography: Faern

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1. The only instruction you were given prior to this photo shoot is that you can’t wear traditional yoga clothes! Tell us why you chose your outfit. What does it say about you?

As a full-time yoga teacher, I spend most of my time in active wear. So I really enjoy those rare occasions when I can wear clothes that don’t stretch. For this shoot I’m wearing my favorite pair of jeans with a button-down Western-style plaid shirt. I’ve always loved horses, so I often dream that one day I’ll be a cowboy. I threw in a pair of striped socks, because all acrobats have a little bit of circus in them. I guess that could define my style, an all-natural down-home circus cowboy.

2. How does yoga help you to express who you are and who you want to be?

Yoga give me the opportunity to feel at home in my body each moment. It also gives me the chance to manifest my desires simply by living from the heart. When I feel connected inside, life flows naturally and everything seems to fall into place. This is such a great feeling and its become more and more common place since I started yoga.

3. What important lessons have you learned about yourself through your yoga practice?

Yoga has taught me how to live in harmony with myself and those around me. Practicing challenging poses, especially in partnership, has helped me to find the path of resistance. It’s so interesting how quickly we can make things so much harder than they need to be. In yoga we take a breath and appreciate each moment as it’s unfolding, this has been an incredible lesson for everyday life.

4. What’s your favorite pose? Why?

Wow, so many to choose from. I’d have to say Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand). This has been the pose that has been most gratifying and challenging all at the same time. Learning how to balance a handstand has been a long journey that’s taught me how to be steady, patient, and humble.

5. Tell us what inspires you so we can be inspired, too.

I’m inspired by pretty much everything I come in contact with. To me life is one amazing opportunity after another, each moment is fully rich with potential and possibility for a new awakening. That said I’m deeply inspired by all my teachers. Namely Hanuman, the monkey god, who has a continual presence in my life. His pure devotion and life of service inspire me to be a better person. He’s the one that inspired me to play the harmonium. Now whenever I’m feeling stuck or uninspired, I chant to the divine and sit for meditation. Or I’ll look to the sky, in each of these moments I’m remind me how blessed we truly are. Life is good.

Seren is part of this awesome AcroYoga couple (Jeremy’s interview will be posted next week!)

Model: Seren (AND Jeremy of course )

Photography: Faern

Interview: Erica Rodefer

1. The only instruction you were given prior to this photo shoot is that you can’t wear traditional yoga clothes! Tell us why you chose your outfit. What does it say about you?

I have always LOVED wearing white. There is something so light, free, simple, summery and feminine about it. I feel most purely like myself in a white dress, like the carefree joyful little girl that lives inside my heart.

2. How does yoga help you to express who you are and who you want to be?

Yoga helps me express who i am by connecting me to what is most important to me, what makes me happy, who i am at my best. It reminds me of the pure and simple beauty that exists within every nook and cranny of my body and in every single moment of life. It gives me confidence in myself and faith in the greater picture that surrounds us, so that i am able to express myself more fully and joyfully in all i do.

3. What important lessons have you learned about yourself through your yoga practice?

My yoga practice has taught me to slow down and honor the sacred beauty of every moment. It has taught me that there is no where to get to, only more love to be cultivated and shared. It has taught me that no matter what is going on I am connected to a great source of power and wisdom within that will always be there to guide me. It has taught me to love myself deeply and to always trust that voice of joyful wisdom within.

4. What’s your favorite pose? Why?

Pincha Myurasana. There is something so strong and graceful about this pose. It calls for such a beautiful balance of effort and surrender, courage and trust, stillness and play.

5. Tell us what inspires you so we can be inspired, too.

I am inspired by: nature, especially the ocean and rivers. animals, my friends and family, my teachers, my elders, children… art, dancing, laughter. simple beauty, like stars, morning sunlight, tumbleweeds. I am inspired by those who love against all odds, by those who live their dreams, by those who make the world a better place just by smiling.
